The different types of whitening

Whitening can be carried out in two main ways: in a professional chairside session or in the comfort of your own home (home whitening) using soft silicone masks provided by your dentist.

Home whitening should not be confused with the countless “do-it-yourself” whitenings found on the web, which are ineﬃcient and harmful to tooth enamel.

Chairside whitening

We are often asked for chairside whitening by laser. However, we must point out that we do not generally recommend this type of whitening, because it involves applying a hydrogen peroxide-based gel to the teeth and then using the laser to activate the gel, releasing free radicals capable of oxidising the molecular pigments. This type of whitening is certainly effective, but it involves a very high degree of hypersensitivity of the teeth after the treatment, with the risk of damage, sometimes irreversible, to the patient:this is why we never recommend laser whitening. Professional chairside whitening, on the other hand, does not involve such risks, as it involves the use of excellent products based on hydrogen peroxide at high concentrations, which give excellent results even without the use of activation lamps.

Chairside whitening is recommended when the patient needs immediate results and does not want to wait several days for home whitening. Although the results are immediate (2 hours), they are not as effective as home whitening, which has a greater eﬃcacy and is more long-lasting.

Home whitening

Home whitening is a non-invasive technique that does not damage tooth enamel. It consists of taking an impression of the dental arches in order to make soft silicone masks adapted to the patient’s mouth in which a special whitening gel of carbamide peroxide with a concentration of 10% will be inserted daily, which will be provided to you by our professionals. If you wear your masks for the number of hours indicated by your doctor, you will get surprising results after just a few days.

For a perfect and optimal result of dental whitening, whether at the chairside or at home, it is advisable to carry out a previous professional dental cleaning, since the presence of plaque and tartar can considerably reduce the effectiveness of the whitening.

This technique is considered to be one of the most effective, safe and stable over time.
